Mechanical Engineering Intern

Little Rapids Corporation (LRC) is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern for summer 2027 at our Rapids Paper + Packaging facility in Green Bay, WI.

LRC has two divisions, Graham Professional, converting paper products for the medical and beauty industries, and Rapids Paper + Packaging, uniting Shawano Specialty Papers and Nexxa – Print Division under a single brand. Rapids Paper + Packaging brings together specialty paper, flexible packaging, advanced printing, and functional coating technologies.

Work Location & Schedule

Location: 2970 Walker Drive, Green Bay, WI 54311

Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:00 pm (approximate)

Position Objective Statement:

The Mechanical Engineering Intern supports the engineering and production teams by assisting with the design, analysis, maintenance, and continuous improvement of equipment and processes within a flexographic printing manufacturing environment. Through practical application of engineering principles, the intern will develop technical skills and gain exposure to manufacturing best practices in a fast-paced printing environment.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, and engineering personnel to evaluate equipment performance, identify improvement opportunities, and contribute to initiatives that enhance safety, productivity, print quality, and operational excellence.
• Support the plant’s maintenance team with central projects and tasks essential to continuous improvement and product development.
• Assist with the creation of part models and drawings by utilizing SolidWorks: guards, bearing mounts, platforms, etc.
• Assist with a variety of engineering, maintenance, and continuous improvement projects at different stages of completion, collaborating with both internal teams and external contractors to support equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and manufacturing objectives within the flexographic printing environment.
• Work with a multi-functional team consisting of members of the operating floor, management and suppliers
• Identify safety hazards or areas for improvement and assist with troubleshooting and brainstorming improvements and corrections.
• Assist with the development of documentation for engineering processes/projects.
• Develop periodic presentations of findings, results and impacts on performance via routine check-ins with management personnel, as well as a comprehensive formal presentation at the end of the intern period.
• Other relevant assignments as made by management which may involve topics such as Safety, Information Systems, Process Control, Automation, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Maintenance, Converting Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, Exposure to vendors of chemicals, clothing, equipment, etc.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform basic computer operations such as email, data entry, navigation skills within press operation and data systems, and operate a computer keyboard
• Mathematical skills required to compute percentages, weights, and must be able to measure and calculate the supplies required to complete each job as scheduled
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language, such as machine operation instructions, safety instructions, etc.
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Ability to successfully pass a post-offer drug screen and physical.
• Self-motivated, but also able to work as an effective team member.
• Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work in a normal office environment to include: sitting or standing for long periods of time, operating various standard office equipment, carrying paper documents/files, reaching and bending, speaking on the telephone, etc.
• Work around fast-moving machinery
• Walk/stand, bending, stooping, working with hands
• Exposure to noise levels and will be required to wear various PPE items based on the task being performed, including, but not limited to, hearing protection, eye protection, hat or hair net, hi-vis vest, safety shoes, cut gloves, etc.

Knowledge, Education and Training Qualifications and Certifications:

Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field, with successful completion of entry to intermediate-level engineering coursework demonstrating an interest in applying engineering principles within a manufacturing environment.
